NAMDRC Acquisition FAQ

GENERAL QUESTIONS:

Why is CHEST pursuing the acquisition of NAMDRC?

The American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) and the National Association for Medical Direction of Respiratory Care (NAMDRC) have shared goals and overlapping membership. After working collaboratively in the advocacy space and on educational efforts for many years, the leadership for both organizations felt there is considerable value in combining forces. After several months of discussion, we have collectively decided to move forward with CHEST’s acquisition of NAMDRC.

CHEST has a deep history of patient-centric advocacy. It is our responsibility to our members and patients to remain focused on advocacy efforts to advance patient care and end lung disease. The acquisition of NAMDRC will strengthen and fortify CHEST’s presence in the public policy and advocacy arena, while also providing CHEST with a physical presence in Washington, D.C.

What is the timing for the acquisition?

The acquisition process is currently underway and will be finalized by April 6, 2020. As the process proceeds, we will start aligning our policy and advocacy priorities with the introduction of our joint Health Policy and Advocacy Committee, whose members will be shaping our advocacy efforts, with oversight from the CHEST Board of Regents, moving forward.

What will be the advocacy priorities for the organization? We will rely on our newly formed Health Policy and Advocacy Committee to assist CHEST leadership and the CHEST Board of Regents in developing and implementing CHEST’s health policy positions, setting CHEST’s advocacy agendas in the legislative and regulatory arenas, engaging with policymakers, and educating CHEST members on governmental affairs relevant to CHEST’s mission. Our policy priorities are centered around the following key areas: pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine.

Will CHEST weigh in on the presidential election?

In strengthening our advocacy efforts to improve access to quality care for patients with respiratory disease by removing regulatory and legislative barriers to appropriate treatment, we will leverage current events and opportunities to weigh in on relevant policy. Health-care conversations prompted by the upcoming presidential election may provide us with opportunities to share our position on policy issues.

Will you keep both the CHEST Annual Meeting and NAMDRC Annual Meeting?

CHEST will continue with plans for the NAMDRC 2021 meeting in Sonoma and beyond.

Who will be in charge of advocacy at CHEST?

The newly formed Health Policy and Advocacy Committee is appointed to help CHEST and its Board of Regents in developing and implementing health policy positions, setting an advocacy agenda in the legislative and regulatory arenas, engaging with policymakers, and educating CHEST members on governmental affairs relevant to CHEST’s mission.

Are any NAMDRC members joining the CHEST board or taking on other leadership positions?

NAMDRC Executive Director, Phillip Porte, will stay on to provide strategic counsel as we work to integrate NAMDRC into CHEST. To ensure we are executing our advocacy strategy in lockstep post-acquisition, we have instituted the joint Health Policy and Advocacy Committee, comprising of select CHEST and NAMDRC leadership, and will target legislative and regulatory issues impacting pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine that are important to CHEST members.
