There are qualities and skills that the Nominating Committee will look for when assessing candidates. Review the list below (although descriptive, it’s certainly not exhaustive), and highlight your qualifications and skills in your vision statement.
Leadership: Candidate should have demonstrated leadership abilities, at least a 3- to 5-year horizon on their thinking; the ability to effectively inspire and empower others; the ability to effectively direct CHEST resources to achieve its goals and objectives; and the ability to build teamwork among peers with different needs, backgrounds, and interests.
Governance: Candidate should demonstrate that they can make judgments in the interest of the entire membership without conflicting interests; understand the duties and responsibilities of the Board of Regents; clearly articulate the difference between governance and management; know the duties of care, loyalty, and obedience, and be able to give examples of exercising each of these; demonstrate how they have governed in the past; give instances in which they have elevated peers from micromanaging to governance; and know what it means to govern.
Experience: Candidate should have experience and competence with organizational finances and budgeting; a variety of life experiences; management experience; experience or demonstrated understanding of issues related to quality, safety measures, and health-care reform; and experience in a CHEST leadership position, such as Chair of the Council of NetWorks, Council of Global Governors, Annual Scientific Program Committee, the CHEST Foundation Board of Trustees, or other committee.
The Nominating Committee also recognizes the importance of diverse representation on the Board of Regents. To that end, a Board profile (PDF included in Google Drive folder) has been compiled. Note gaps in the Board composition and indicate on the nomination form, under “Reason for Nomination,” how you would fill gaps as a member on the Board of Regents in the Presidential line.
4. Submission
Complete the Nomination Form and submit all documents to Suzanne Sletto by August 4, 2017. The Nominating Committee will review the documents and select a slate of candidates. Candidate will be notified of selection in late September. Final approval of the slate will take place at CHEST 2017, during the Annual Meeting of the Fellows.
