Presidents & Master Fellows
President: Alvin V. Thomas, MD, FCCP, is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine at Howard University in Washington, DC. He is Chief of the Pulmonary Division at Howard and presently serves as Graduate Faculty Representative on the Howard University Board of Trustees.
Dr. Thomas received his medical degree from Howard University and did his Internal Medicine Residency and Pulmonary Fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI. His scholarly and research interests are in pulmonary vascular disease, particularly sickle cell acute chest syndrome and pulmonary hypertension in sickle cell disease. Dr. Thomas has been a member of the ACCP since 1973 and has been active in the ACCP leadership since 1998, serving on several committees, including the Continuing Education Committee. He was a Trustee of The CHEST Foundation (1999-2003), Chair of the ACCP Scientific Program and Abstracts Committee (2000-2001), and was Scientific Program Chair for CHEST 2002.
President-Elect: James A. L. Mathers, Jr., MD, FCCP, is a partner with Pulmonary Associates of Richmond, in Richmond, VA, and has 27 years of private practice experience in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. Dr. Mathers received his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He completed a medical residency at Maine Medical Center, Portland, then returned to Columbia University for his pulmonary fellowship. Dr. Mathers has served the ACCP in numerous leadership roles, some of which include: two terms as Regent-at-Large on the Board of Regents, two terms on the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents, Trustee of The CHEST Foundation, Regent Representative to NAMDRC, Chair of the Government Relations Committee, and Chair of the Critical Care Work Group. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Mathers has worked with our sister societies, legislators, and regulatory agencies to remove barriers to appropriate care for patients with diseases of the chest. Dr. Mathers believes that a shortage of chest physicians, in particular those practicing critical care medicine, is a significant problem facing our membership and society. He expects to address the issues of a shortfall of critical care physicians, new educational requirements for CME, and onerous regulatory requirements over the next 2 years.
Immediate Past President: Mark J. Rosen, MD, FCCP, is Chief of Divisions Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep, North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New Hyde Park, NY. He received his medical degree from Brown University Medical School in Providence, RI. After his residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, NY, he completed a pulmonary medicine fellowship there and a critical care medicine fellowship at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, also in New York.
Dr. Rosen is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Critical Care Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), the American College of Physicians, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Rosen has been named repeatedly in the “Best Doctors in New York,” “Best Doctors in America,” and “Best Doctors in North America” listings. His research interests include pulmonary disease and critical illness in patients with HIV infection; respiratory failure; and medical ethics. A nationally recognized educator, Dr. Rosen chaired the Scientific Program Committee for CHEST 1998, the annual international scientific assembly of the ACCP, and he was course director for the ACCP Pulmonary Board Review Course from 1998 through 2001. He has published numerous articles and textbook chapters and co-edited the textbook, HIV and the Lung.
