CHEST Journal Names New Editor in Chief
Richard S. Irwin of UMass Memorial becomes
editor in chief
of peer-reviewed journal CHEST
(NORTHBROOK, IL, July 7, 2005) – Richard S. Irwin, MD, FCCP, has been named the new editor in chief of CHEST, the peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP). Dr. Irwin, tenured Professor of Medicine, Professor of Nursing, and Chair of Critical Care Operations at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center, in Worcester, MA, will become the journal's 7th editor in chief, following 12 years of leadership by A. Jay Block, MD, Master FCCP.
"With the highest regular circulation of any respiratory or critical care journal in the world, physicians from many disciplines depend on CHEST to inform and educate them about how to better care for their patients," said Dr. Irwin. "I am honored and privileged to take on the responsibilities of editor in chief of CHEST and will strive to continue to elevate CHEST's reputation as a superior source to find science and scholarly works in critical care, sleep, pulmonary medicine, and cardiovascular interactions that relate to these three special areas of interest."
In recent years, CHEST has taken great strides forward and is now distributed to 101 countries, with special translated editions in China, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Mexico, and parts of Latin America, as well as a special English language version in India. Through a partnership with the Health InterNetwork: Access to Research Initiative (HINARI), immediate free access to CHEST has been made available to institutions in the world's most economically disadvantaged countries.
As Editor in Chief, Dr. Irwin is committed to the continued improvement of the content and distribution of CHEST. During his term, Dr. Irwin plans to have CHEST become more reflective of contemporary societal issues, including public policy, reimbursement, open-access publishing, liability reform, and patient-focused care. Dr. Irwin would also like to make CHEST faster and easier to read, by incorporating "bottom-line" conclusions and allowing subscribers to download online material to hand-held computers.
"It is an exciting time in the medical field. Advances in medical research and technology affect all aspects of health care and the treatment patients receive," said Dr. Irwin. "I would like for CHEST to continue to evolve and reflect the wide spectrum of changes."
Dr. Irwin has been Chair and Editor in Chief of Assessment in Critical Care and Pulmonary Self-Education and Evaluation of Knowledge, Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of Intensive Care Medicine, and Editorial Board Member and Department Editor for CHEST. As he assumes his new role of Editor in Chief of CHEST, he will relinquish these other responsibilities. As an active Fellow of the ACCP since 1979, Dr. Irwin has served the ACCP in many leadership roles, including President (2003-2004), chairing major committees and serving on the Board of Trustees of The CHEST Foundation, Board of Regents, and Executive Committee of the Board of Regents. He has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards and honors, including being selected by his peers to be listed in the Best Doctors in America and America's Top Doctors. To date, he has published or has in press 155 peer-reviewed articles and 195 textbook chapters, and he has edited 32 books or monographs. Dr. Irwin and his wife Diane live in Westborough, MA.
CHEST is a peer-reviewed journal published by the ACCP. It is available online each month at www.chestjournal.org. ACCP represents 16,500 members who provide clinical respiratory, sleep, critical care, and cardiothoracic patient care in the United States and throughout the world. The ACCP's mission is to promote the prevention and treatment of diseases of the chest through leadership, education, research, and communication.
