The ACCP and The CHEST Foundation have lost a dear friend and committed leader in December 2009. Thomas L. Petty, MD, Master FCCP was known as the father of pulmonary medicine. Over his long career, Dr. Petty made unparalleled contributions to the field of pulmonary and critical care medicine. His involvement with the ACCP began in 1969 when he became an FCCP. He was the senior editor of the journal CHEST from 1970 to 1975, and later, he served as ACCP President from 1981 to 1982. Named a Master Fellow in 1995, Dr. Petty was only the sixth physician given this high honor.
The CHEST Foundation was honored to pay tribute to Dr. Petty in 2007 by establishing an endowment fund in his name and honoring him during the Making a Difference Awards Dinner in Chicago, IL, at CHEST 2007.
