November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month
Great American Smokeout – November 17, 2011
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, with approximately 90% of cases related to active smoking. The ACCP and The CHEST Foundation are committed to fighting lung cancer through research, advocacy, and physician and patient education.
The ACCP is an 18,400-member international medical specialty society. Its mission is to promote the prevention and treatment of diseases of the chest though leadership, education, research, and communication. Together with The CHEST Foundation, its philanthropic arm, the ACCP continues to be a leading resource for the improvement in cardiopulmonary health and critical care worldwide.

- Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.
- Approximately 90% of lung cancer cases are related to smoking.
- In 2009, there were approximately 160,000 deaths from lung cancer.*
- Approximately 3,400 lung cancer deaths per year are caused by environmental tobacco exposure or secondhand smoke.*

ACCP Facts
- The ACCP was one of the first medical organizations to recognize the dangers of cigarette smoking.
- The ACCP was instrumental in helping pass the 1965 Cigarette Labeling Act, which called for the US Surgeon General’s Warning.
- The ACCP played a key role in the 1990 smoking ban on domestic airline flights.
- The ACCP publishes the most comprehensive evidence-based clinical practice guidelines on lung cancer.
The CHEST Foundation

- The CHEST Foundation and the LUNGevity Foundation have jointly sponsored an award in lung cancer research since 2002.
- In an effort to teach children about good lung health and the dangers of tobacco, The Foundation created Lung Lessonssm: A Presenters Guide. This DVD teaches volunteers how to present this important tobacco prevention information to elementary schoolchildren throughout the country.
