President & Master Fellows

President: Suhail Raoof, MBBS, FCCP, is Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Medical College of Columbia University and Chief of Pulmonary/Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy, and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Medicine at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Raoof obtained his medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi University, India. He completed his medical residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York, followed by a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Raoof has served the ACCP in many capacities, including Chair of the US and Canadian Council of Governors, Chair of the Membership Committee, member-at-large of the Board of Regents, Chair of the CHEST 2008 Annual Scientific Program Committee, Chair of the Council of Committees, Chair of the Global Education Track for CHEST 2010, ACCP representative to the American College of Radiology, and ACCP representative to the European Respiratory Society’s multisociety effort to develop noninvasive ventilation guidelines. Dr. Raoof’s academic interests include mechanical ventilation and chest radiology for pulmonologists. Dr. Raoof is the recipient of many honors, including Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP). Dr. Raoof’s vision for the ACCP during his term will be to continue to promote the ACCP as a leader in clinical chest medicine and make available to the membership cutting-edge initiatives to deliver evidence-based medical education. He also endeavors to keep the membership informed of new and emerging health-care needs, so they can incorporate best medical practices in their day-to-day patient care and partner with the College for their recertification, licensure, and educational needs. Dr. Raoof will promote leadership development and mentorship within the College. He will continue to strengthen collaboration with strategic international partners. Finally, by promoting the OneBreath™ Campaign, he hopes to encourage virtual participation of the lay public through social media and increase awareness of pulmonary diseases and develop new partnerships with health-care societies and others.

 

President-Elect: Darcy D. Marciniuk, MD, FCCP, is a Professor of Medicine and Head of the Division of Respirology, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada. Dr. Marciniuk received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Saskatchewan in 1984 and had specialty training in internal medicine and respiratory medicine at the University of Western Ontario and at the University of Manitoba. He returned to Saskatoon in 1990, where he assumed his current faculty position with the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Marciniuk is currently a member of the ACCP Board of Regents and a Trustee of The CHEST Foundation. He has held a number of leadership positions in the ACCP, including Governor of Saskatchewan; Chair of the Pulmonary Physiology, Function, and Rehabilitation Network; and Co-Chair of CHEST 2005. Dr. Marciniuk has also served on the Steering Committee of the Canadian National Lung Health Framework, is a Past Chair of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Examination Committee in Respirology, and is a Past President of the Canadian Thoracic Society. Dr. Marciniuk has published more than 90 peer-reviewed publications, chapters, and reviews. His interests in pulmonary medicine include COPD and clinical physiology and exercise.

 

Immediate Past President: David Gutterman, MD, FCCP, is the Northwestern Mutual Professor of Cardiology and Senior Associate Dean for Research at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI. He matriculated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with BA and MD degrees and completed a residency and chief residency in Medicine at the University of Iowa. After completing a cardiology fellowship at the University of Iowa, Dr. Gutterman joined the faculty at Iowa, later moving to the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Gutterman’s service to the ACCP has included membership on the Education and Government Liaison Committees. He has chaired the Health and Science Policy committee and continues to serve as the ACCP representative to the executive committee of the Antithrombotics Guideline panel. He has also served as Chair of the Cardiovascular Medicine and Surgery NetWork and as a Regent-at-Large. Dr. Gutterman’s primary research focus is on mechanisms regulating coronary vascular reactivity in the human heart. His work also includes translational studies examining the effect of exercise and diet on vascular endothelial function and the propensity for atherosclerosis. His laboratory has received continuous federal funding for over two decades and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers. Dr. Gutterman has chaired NIH and AHA scientific study sections, is a member of the Association of University Cardiologists, and serves as an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Physiology. The growing complexities of medical care, a stricter regulatory environment, and greater emphasis on quality outcome measures require a matrixed strategic approach to effectively and efficiently coordinate the practice of medicine. Dr. Gutterman’s vision for the ACCP stresses collaboration and integration of all our activities to better serve our membership and facilitate their ability to improve patient health.

 

President-Designate: Michael H. Baumann, MD, MS, FCCP, is Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi. Dr. Baumann is also the Chief Quality Officer for the University Hospitals and Health System. He is a consultant to the Jackson, Mississippi, Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. Baumann received his MD degree from the University of Nevada-Reno School of Medicine, where he also served his internship. He completed his residency at the University of California-Davis and completed a fellowship at the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston. Dr. Baumann’s ACCP leadership roles have been extensive. He has chaired the following: Quality Improvement Committee, Performance Measures Development Task Force for Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Health and Science Policy Committee, CHEST 2006, Scientific Presentations and Awards Committee, Council of Governors, Clinical Pulmonary Medicine NetWork, and Membership Committee. He has served on many other ACCP task forces and subcommittees and presently is a member of the CHEST and the ACCP-SEEK Editorial Boards. Dr. Baumann has more than 90 publications, including peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and reviews. Dr. Baumann is frequently an invited speaker at medical meetings throughout the United States and often abroad. His particular interests include pleural disease, evidence-based medicine, quality improvement and performance measures, and health-care reform issues.
