Fact Sheet

The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) is a not-for-profit medical society representing 17,800 members in more than 100 countries. Members include specialist physicians and allied health professionals focusing on diseases of the chest.

Mission: To promote the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chest diseases through education, communication, and research.

Background: The ACCP has set the standard in clinical chest medicine since 1935. ACCP members are specialists in pulmonology, critical care, and sleep medicine, and are committed to improving cardiopulmonary health worldwide. The ACCP was among the first organizations to issue warnings about the dangers of cigarette smoking.

Education: Education to improve patient care is the most important mission of the ACCP. The ACCP delivers high-quality continuing medical education (CME) in person, in print, online, and through mobile technology. Each year, the ACCP offers many educational courses, including simulation education, on all aspects of chest medicine. The CHEST annual meeting provides opportunities to share innovative clinical research and earn required CME credits.

Advocacy: The ACCP works with elected officials on activities and legislation affecting chest medicine. Members’ views on tobacco regulation, CME, Medicare reimbursement, research funding, and other health-care reform proposals are represented before Congress and state and local policymakers. The ACCP keeps its members updated on the political and socioeconomic issues influencing their practice and research.

The CHEST Foundation: Founded in 1996 as the philanthropic arm of the ACCP, The CHEST Foundation provides resources and supports initiatives in tobacco prevention, critical care, and end-of-life care issues, as well as awards for research and community service.

Resources: The CHEST Foundation has provided the resources to advance the prevention and treatment of diseases of the chest since 1996. By giving life to projects in local communities and across the world, The CHEST Foundation enables the ACCP to realize its vision of being the leading resource for the improvement in cardiopulmonary health and critical care worldwide.

By collaborating at the community level, The CHEST Foundation is able to develop education and prevention programs that serve as a catalyst to create innovative solutions that positively change thousands of lives.
