Senate Agrees To Delay Medicare Physician Cuts for 31 Days: Discussions Continue on SGR Relief for all of 2011

On November 18, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid reached agreement with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on a unanimous consent request for a 31-day reprieve from the 23% Medicare physician payment cut that was scheduled to take effect on December 1.

ACCP Acts To Protect Physician Members From Costly and Burdensome Regulations

The American College of Chest Physicians, in partnership with 26 other medical specialty societies, has filed a motion to intervene as a plaintiff in the case of the American Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Association, and the Medical Society for the District of Columbia v. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), to declare unlawful and set aside the FTC's application of the Red Flags Rule to ACCP physician members and physicians in general.

Senate Votes To Begin Debate on Health System Reform Bill
On November 21, the US Senate voted to begin debate on health system reform and formally consider HR 3590, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, by a party-line vote of 60-39.

US Senate Blocks S 1776
On October 21, 2009, the US Senate was unable to obtain the 60 votes necessary to invoke cloture to vote on S 1776, the Medicare Physicians Fairness Act of 2009. The motion failed on a vote of 47-53.
