Dying cannot be scientifically studied since each person dies in his or her own unique way. In my experience, a few “give up the ghost” and die unexpectedly soon after being told of a terminal condition. Others linger way beyond any reasonable medical expectations.

In her charming southern drawl, Dr. Sheila Goodnight always knew the right thing to say. She had immense empathy for whomever she was talking to, whether it was a medical student, a resident, or a colleague. AG is a 75-year-old woman diagnosed with COPD 2 years earlier. Her room air oxygen saturation is 90% to 91% at rest. Treadmill oxygen titration revealed desaturation below 88%. She was prescribed 3 L via nasal cannula with saturation increasing to 98% at rest and 92% with exercise.
