These sessions will review and complete the American
Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Critical Care Self-Evaluation
Process (SEP) Module 22R and the ABIM Pulmonary
Disease Self-Evaluation Process (SEP) Module 29R. This is
an excellent opportunity for anyone recertifying to review
the ABIM material related to the critical care or pulmonary
subspecialty and earn recertification points from ABIM
toward the Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
program.
ABIM SEP Course Information
If you are certifying with ABIM for the first time, the
sessions are designed to review questions developed by
the ABIM. If you are recertifying, you can answer ABIM
questions and submit your responses to the ABIM for the
CPD program.
Each module includes 60 questions and will be
administered through group discussion with experts and
colleagues, using an automated response system. At the
end of the session, participants will have the option to
mail their completed answer sheets to the ABIM for
recertification credit. The modules will be available from
ABIM, or you may obtain a copy on-site.
To be eligible for ABIM credit, you must:
- Be a diplomate of the ABIM.
- Be enrolled in the ABIM CPD program.
- Not have completed either of the SEP Modules
to be used for the sessions.

Mechanical Ventilation 2008
Chair: Dr. Neil MacIntyre, MD, FCCP
This course will trace mechanical ventilation support (MVS)
from its origins to the present time and into the future. It
will emphasize the use of graphic displays of airways
mechanics to help clinicians optimize MVS for difficult-to-treat patients. Common problems, such as providing
ventilation support for the patient with severe obstruction
and COPD or the hypoxemic patient with ARDS, will be
addressed. Evidence-based information will be highlighted
during case management presentations and discussions.
Learning objectives:
- Examine the newer modes of mechanical ventilation
support.
- Analyze pressure, volume, and low waveforms to help
improve the patient-ventilator interface.

Lung Pathology
Chair: Henry D. Tazelaar, MD, FCCP
This half-day course will offer a comprehensive review
and update of pulmonary pathology, with an emphasis on
clinically relevant issues. Presentations by expert faculty
will focus the educational content to benefit all attendees,
whether you are a practicing pulmonologist, pathologist,
radiologist, or a resident preparing for the pulmonary
board examination.
On-site, the Lung Pathology course participants will
receive a black and white slidebook, as well as a CD-ROM
with the slides projected in color. In addition, a link will be
available and sent via e-mail to all course participants a
week prior to the conference. This link will contain all the
faculty slide presentations in color for your own printing.
Learning objectives:
- Recognize a pattern-based approach to the diagnosis of
difuse lung disease, including the idiopathic interstitial
pneumonias, pneumoconioses, and vasculitides.
- Distinguish between common and uncommon tumors
of the lung and pleura, including lymphoproliferative
lesions.
- Cite the main pathologic changes that afect
transplanted lungs.
- Acquire information about the pathologic data on
pulmonary infections and the array of molecular
diagnostic tests useful for diagnosis.
- Explain the pathologic indings of the most common
types of pediatric lung diseases.
