Quick Reference Guide

Rehabilitation

The major goal of discharge to a non-ICU site is to achieve for the patient maximum functional potential, in order for the patient to realize the desired quality of life. For the motivated patient, rehabilitation can help to achieve the goal.

Rehabilitation includes medical management, education, therapeutic exercise, nutritional intervention, psychosocial support, speech/communication therapy, alteration of the physical environment to improve functional capabilities, and use of adaptive equipment. A multidisciplinary team approach is recommended. The patient should be medically stable before rehabilitation is undertaken.
