Mechanical Ventilation: Beyond the ICU
Quick Reference Guide

Ventilator Settings

Weaning is not always a realistic goal for children going home with chronic ventilatory support. However, mobility and quality of life are maximized if the child can breathe unassisted for some portion of each day—even if the child cannot be weaned completely.

Ventilators must be adjusted to meet the ventilatory demands of the child totally, giving the child the benefit of as much energy as possible to direct into activities of daily living for optimal growth and development. Ventilator settings must be evaluated and adjusted on an individual case basis, with clinical and physiologic monitoring.
