Evaluation for Discharge to a Non-ICU Site

Evaluation, including a nocturnal polysomnogram as indicated, will (1) determine the patient's need for prolonged ventilatory assistance, and (2) guide the selection of the optimal discharge site and ventilation modality for long-term ventilation.

Evaluation should include integrity of the upper airway to assure structural functional patency and to assure that the patient can clear secretions effectively. Inability to clear secretions may be an indication for invasive ventilation.
