Mechanical Ventilation: Beyond the ICU
Quick Reference Guide

TOC | Previous | Next

Noninvasive and Invasive Mechanical Ventilation

Expectations for noninvasive forms of ventilatory support:

  • in stable patients with chronic respiratory failure, can be expected to improve physiologic function and quality of life, and decrease the frequency of episodes requiring acute care;
  • in patients with acute respiratory failure, can be expected to decrease the complications often associated with invasive ventilation.

When indicated and feasible, long-term noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is preferred over invasive ventilation because of greater ease of administration, preservation of upper airway function, enhanced quality of life, and lower cost.
