Management of Spontaneous Pneumothorax
Interactive Web Site

Initial Management: Clinically Stable Patient with a Small SSP

Management Options (listed in order of preference)

  1. Hospitalize and either observe or place a chest tube

The patient should be hospitalized (good consensus) and either observed (good consensus) or treated with a chest tube (some consensus) depending on the extent of their symptoms and the course of their pneumothorax.

Note: Patients should not be managed in the emergency department with observation or by simple aspiration without hospitalization.
