Spontaneous Pneumothorax Recurrence Prevention: General Information: When and How?

After which pneumothorax recurrence should recurrence prevention be provided?

Second occurrence: 85% of panel members felt recurrence prevention should be provided after a second pneumothorax occurrence (intervention can occur during a second occurrence). 15% of panel members would offer an recurrence prevention intervention after the first occurrence.

Preferred intervention for recurrence prevention

  • Surgical approach (very good consensus)
  • Chest tube applied chemical sclerosis

Acceptable rarely where surgery is contraindicated or patients refuse operative procedure.
