Operative Spontaneous Pneumothorax Recurrence Prevention: Type of Bullectomy and Pleurodesis

Type of intraoperative bullectomy procedure

Bullectomy should be performed if bullae are visualized. Staple bullectomy is the preferred management (very good consensus).

Type of intraoperative pleurodesis and extent

Parietal pleural abrasion should be performed in most patients and be limited to the upper half of the lung or chest wall (good consensus).
Parietal pleurectomy (some consensus) is an acceptable alternative pleurodesis technique (limited to the upper half of the lung or chest wall).
No consensus was reached regarding the utility of talc poudrage in PSP recurrence prevention.
