Operative Spontaneous Pneumothorax Recurrence Prevention: Type of Bullectomy and Pleurodesis
Type of intraoperative bullectomy procedure
Bullectomy should be performed if bullae are visualized. Staple bullectomy is the preferred management (very good consensus).
Type of intraoperative pleurodesis and extent
Acceptable interventions to produce pleural symphysis include:
Parietal pleural abrasion (good consensus)
Parietal pleurectomy (some consensus)
Talc poudrage (insufflation) (some consensus)
Extent of pleural intervention
Parietal pleural abrasion or parietal pleurectomy limited to the upper half of the hemithorax is preferred (good consensus)
