Table 10—Management Recommendations for Patients with Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax Selected for Observation
A young previously healthy patient with a primary spontaneous pneumothorax managed by observation should…
  1. Be monitored in the emergency department for >3 h and <6 h (VG)* before discharge home.
  2. Have one chest radiograph (VG) performed, after the initial evaluation chest radiograph, during emergency department monitoring.
  3. Be seen in follow-up within 12 h to 2 days (G), after emergency department discharge, with a follow-up chest radiograph (VG).
*Levels of consensus (Table 4) appear in parenthesis: P = perfect, VG = very good, G = good, SC = some consensus, NC = no consensus.
