Management of Spontaneous Pneumothorax
Interactive Web Site

Table 13—Additional Clinical Factors to Consider for Patients With a SSP
Role of pulmonary function testing:
  1. Ordering pulmonary function testing during the initial management of a clinically stable patient with a small secondary spontaneous pneumothorax who could tolerate such testing is inappropriate (P)*.
  2. Under certain circumstances† (G), expert survey respondents would utilize pulmonary function tests, performed within the prior month, in a clinically stable patient with a secondary spontaneous pneumothorax to make recurrence prevention decisions.
Role of age:
  1. Ninety percent of expert survey respondents do not utilize the age of a patient with a secondary spontaneous pneumothorax to avoid an invasive surgical intervention (and instead pursue simple observation).
*Levels of consensus (Table 4) appear in parenthesis: P = perfect, VG = very good, G = good, SC = some consensus, NC = no consensus.
