Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines [Definition]

An evidence-based clinical practice guideline is a statement that is based on scientific literature, explicitly documents the process used to develop the statement, and grades the strength of the evidence used in making clinical recommendations. The most common definition of evidence-based medicine requires that it follow a bottom-up approach integrating the best external evidence with individual clinical expertise and consideration of patient preferences.

Systematic Reviews

Systematic reviews are a compilation of all available literature. Inclusion and exclusion criteria for studies to be reviewed, and a comprehensive literature search are preformed. The results of the literature review are then summarized according to the criteria. This rigorous process to identify the literature provides scientific, rather that subjective, summaries of the literature, and could reveal new evidence and provide reliable evidence to aid clinical decision-making.
