How to Develop a Guideline

Previous Question | Main page | Next Question

What happens after the Guideline Panel submits the document to the HSP Committee?

Guideline Panel and Executive Committee Review
During the first review phase, the reviewers should be concerned with the following criteria:

  • Is this material clinically relevant?
  • Are all the evidence review questions addressed?
  • Do the discussions and recommendations reflect the evidence?
  • Are limitations of the evidence properly noted?
  • Do the recommendations flow from the discussions?
  • Are the grades appropriate given the level of evidence and the net benefits to the patients?
  • Are the introductory remarks and conclusions covering the appropriate content?
  • Is the methodology adequately summarized?
  • Are the suggestions for additional research included?
  • Are key words, abbreviations, references, tables, graphs, and figures included and correct?

The above criteria must be met and the document must be formatted according to "Instructions to Authors of CHEST." The Guideline Panel Review Form will assist you through this process and must be completed and submitted with the document to the project coordinator.

HSP Committee Review/BOR Review
During the HSP review process, the designated reviewers are required to complete the HSP Review Form. The HSP review focuses the following criteria:

  • Is the document clinically relevant?
  • Is the document readable?
  • Are the recommendations supported by the evidence?
  • Do the recommendations flow from the discussion?
  • Would this document receive approval to represent the ACCP policy?
  • Was the HSP format and "Instructions to Authors of CHEST" followed?
  • Does the discussion of the clinical question flow from the introduction of the document through to the conclusion of the document?

Process

  1. The entire document will be sent to each member of the HSP Committee. One member from the HSP Committee and one member from the appropriate NetWork Steering Committee will be selected to read the document from cover to cover as primary reviewers and complete the HSP Review Form.

  2. The selected primary reviewer from the NetWork is responsible for the overall review, including collating and summarizing all comments, in the allotted time frame. Only the HSP Committee reserves the authority to approve or disapprove changes.

  3. The HSP Committee will approve, approve conditionally, or disapprove the document, no later than 4 to 6 weeks after its receipt, at the HSP monthly conference call.

  4. If changes are required, the document will be resubmitted to the Guideline Panel for appropriate changes. The primary HSP reviewer will verify that the Guideline Panel has made the required changes and will recommend the document progress to the BOR for review.

  5. Upon HSP authorization, the document will be submitted to the BOR for review. The BOR may assign a primary reviewer or the BOR Executive Committee may chose to review the document. This process is similar to the HSP Committee review phase.

  6. Upon approval of the BOR, the HSP will submit the document to CHEST.
