Health and Science Policy and Evidence-Based Medicine

Core Elements of Practice Guideline Development

Element 1: ACCP evidence-based guidelines must follow the established conflict of interest policy of the ACCP.

Element 2: If an ACCP evidence-based guideline receives financial support from an outside source, the appropriate funds will be invested into a rigorous methodologic process to formulate graded recommendations, as well as the operational costs of developing the guidelines, such as meetings, travel, support, production, editing, publicizing, printing, and distribution. Such reviews must be conducted by an evidence review body that is independent of the development group to comply with ACCP’s conflict of interest policies and the Intermediate Sanctions regulations that might create liability issues for the ACCP and any contributing editor or author.

Element 3: The HSP Committee will determine how the literature review will be conducted by soliciting proposals from evidence review centers or conducting the literature review in-house.

Element 4: No honorarium will be provided to ACCP evidence-based guideline panel members (see Element 2)

Element 5: All ACCP evidence-based guideline manuscripts will be reviewed by ACCP’s Health and Science Policy Committee and HSP Guidelines Subcommittee, relevant NetWorks, and the ACCP Board of Regents prior to submission for publication in CHEST.
