Mechanical Ventilation

Positive pressure mechanical ventilation is life-saving in patients with respiratory failure. Although older studies emphasized the morbidity and mortality associated with mechanical ventilation,⁵² dramatic improvements have occurred since Darioli and Perret's landmark study,⁵³ which established the safety and effectiveness of permissive hypercapnia. Survival is now the rule in most but not all recent studies when techniques to minimize hyperinflation are used.^4,5,53-56
