Note that doubling the inspiratory flow rate (I) causes a dramatic decrease in the I:E ratio but only a modest increase in TE. In contrast, a 40% decrease in the respiratory rate (II) not only decreases the I:E ratio but also substantially increases the TE. RR = respiratory rate; PIFR = peak inspiratory flow rate.
