Institutes
Institutes, also known as centers of excellence, are often located in large tertiary care medical centers affiliated with universities and medical schools. Institutes consist of interdisciplinary groups who share a common focus for the research, diagnosis, and treatment of a specific disease entity. In the late 1970’s the concept of establishing institutes or centers of excellence in medical centers became popular with the emergence of a plethora of new technology for diagnosing disorders and managing patients. These institutes were promoted as being the flagship service(s) of a medical center. They pulled together the “best of the best” and created a medical team to focus on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with difficult diseases and/or medical conditions.
The ACCP adopted this model and established both Critical Care and Sleep Institutes. These institutes provide an opportunity to focus on the combined resources of the ACCP, The CHEST Foundation, other partnering societies, patient groups, and industry representatives to develop new educational and research activities for our members or any healthcare professional interested in critical care or sleep medicine. The Institutes are located as organizational units within the ACCP headquarters. Staff support oversees operational aspects and they are governed by a steering committee of multidisciplinary leaders.
Stay tuned: New projects and programs developed and led by the ACCP-Institutes will be communicated through our web page!
