One Clinical Research Award of $10,000 will be granted for clinical research in women’s health. The grant is made directly to the institution on behalf of the winning applicant. Subjects relating to women’s health may include proposed research in studying gender differences in various disease states, such as lung or heart disease, COPD, or lung cancer, among others. This award opportunity is open to all levels of ACCP members and will fund a research project for 1 year, from July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2010.

The 2008 CHEST Foundation and Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Clinical Research Award in Women’s Pulmonary Health was awarded to two ACCP members. Margaret A. Pisani, MD, MPH, FCCP, is a fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Section, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. Her winning research project is “Gender Differences as They Relate to Outcome in an Older ICU Cohort.” Subani Chandra, MBBS, is a fellow at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New Hyde Park, NY. Her winning research project is “Investigation and Correction of Gender Disparity in Chest Compression Technique During CPR.”

The 2007 Clinical Research Award in Women’s Health winner, Thirumagal Anandhi Murugan, MD, is a fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX. Her winning project, “Menstrual Differences in Airway Inflammation in Asthma,” will primarily evaluate menstrual-related changes in airway inflammation of asthma patients with and without premenstrual exacerbation of systems.
The ACCP Industry Advisory Council Community Outreach Event was held on October 27, 2008, at Penn Alexander School in West Philadelphia, PA. Volunteers from the Women’s Health NetWork, ACCP membership, and the Ambassadors Group, worked together to present The CHEST Foundation’s Lung Lessonssm curriculum to 150 fourth and fifth graders.
