One clinical research award of $10,000 will be granted for clinical research in women’s health. The grant is made directly to the institution on behalf of the winning applicant. Topics that relate to women’s health include proposed research in studying gender differences in various diseases states, such as lung or heart disease, COPD, or lung cancer. This award opportunity is open to all levels of ACCP members, and it will fund a research project for 1 year, from July 1, 2008, through June 30, 2009.

The 2007 winner of the Clinical Research Award in Women’s Health, Thirumagal Anandhi Murugan, MD, is a fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. Her winning project, “Menstrual Differences in Airway Inflammation in Asthma,” will primarily evaluate menstrual-related changes in airway inflammation of patients with asthma, with and without premenstrual exacerbation of systems.
The 2006 Clinical Research Award in Women’s Health winner, Varsha Taskar, MD, FCCP, is an assistant professor of medicine; Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep; at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Tyler, TX. Dr. Taskar presented her findings at the Women’s Health NetWork Open Meeting at CHEST 2007. View her presentation, titled “Depression and Anxiety in Women With COPD.”
