A database was created for each coalition individually and in the aggregate and included survey data. Both descriptive and frequency analyses were conducted on the survey data. All open-ended response questions were coded using open coding, i.e., labeling and categorizing of the data. The factors specified in existing research literature as being important in early stages of coalition development served as initial concepts for the open coding. Specific coding categories emerged during the actual coding of the data. The interview transcripts were coded and organized using StatPak, Verbatim Response.

Correlations among coalition factors (e.g., leadership, decision making, communication, conflict, organizational climate, staffing, capacity building, etc.) and effectiveness indicators (action plan, resources, number of interventions/services, member participation, etc.) were calculated using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. Because of the exploratory nature of this study, correlations with p values between p=.00 and p=.10 were noted and considered suggestive of an association; correlations with p values <.05 were considered statistically significant.
