A Guide to Lung Transplantation

TOC | Previous | Next

Can You Be Considered for Lung Transplantation?

Generally, in order to be considered for lung transplantation, you must:

  • have a condition for which transplantation is considered an effective treatment
  • have severe and progressive lung disease that no longer responds to medical treatment and may be fatal within 2 years
  • be willing to accept the risks of surgery and subsequent medical treatment
  • be physically capable of undergoing surgery and subsequent medical treatment

Even if you otherwise qualify, you may not be considered for lung transplantation if your physicians determine that you are not a good candidate—for example, because of severe, coexisting medical conditions that may be worsened by a surgical procedure and follow-up treatments with powerful immunosuppressive (nonrejection) drugs.
