Advocacy Info: Critical Care
Critical Care Work Group
History
In February 1995, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) (HCFA at the time) issued a memorandum to all Medicare Regional offices instructing them to notify carriers in their regions about Medicare’s policies regarding payment for critical care services. This memorandum resolved many problems which plagued physicians who billed for critical care services. By 1997 carriers were, once again, not applying the policies correctly, and in some instances were making local medical review policies that contradicted the spirit and reading of the 1995 memorandum. As a result, six organizations united as the Critical Care Work Group (CCWG) to address these issues with CMS. These six organizations include:
American College of Chest Physicians
American Association for the Surgery of Trauma
American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists
American Thoracic Society
National Association for Medical Direction of Respiratory Care
Society of Critical Care Medicine
Mission
To bring together the collective knowledge and experience of societies whose members practice critical care to partner with entities such as CMS in solving practice, coverage, and/or payment issues specifically related to critical care services. |
