Designed for intensive care providers with patients in respiratory and cardiac failure, this course will be led by experts from high-volume extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) centers and consists of a mix of lectures and high-fidelity workshops. Topics will include patient selection, ICU management of the patient, and basic troubleshooting of the ECMO circuit. More specifically, the course will focus primarily on venovenous (VV) ECMO for severe respiratory failure. The content will also include an introduction to veno-arterial (VA) ECMO for refractory cardiac failure, cardiopulmonary failure, extracorporeal CPR (eCPR), and guidance for starting and maintaining new ECMO programs.

Target Audience

This course is for intensive care providers, pulmonary and critical care physicians, advanced practice providers (NPs and PAs), ECMO specialists (RNs, RTs), cardiothoracic surgeons, trauma surgeons, cardiologists, and any provider who cares for patients with severe respiratory or cardiac failure.

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of patient selection and management while supported by ECMO.
  3. Acquire the ability to manage patient and circuit complications during ECMO.

ABIM MOC Statement
Successful completion of this CME activity enables the participant to earn up to 16.75 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC points.

Upon successful completion of this course, CHEST will submit your completion data to ABIM via ACCME’s Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS) for MOC points. Please allow 5-7 business days after claiming for credits to be posted to your ABIM record.

After you register for the course, you will receive an e-mail with details about completing the course pretest and accessing course materials (made available 10 to 14 days prior to the course start). Data collected on your performance at hands-on skill stations will be available through our site.

Laptops or tablet computers are required for the course. The general session room will be equipped with wireless Internet access and power for personal electronics.

Cancellation Policy
Tuition refund requests for this course must be received in writing by October 31 for a full refund, less a $100 processing fee. Refunds will not be given after October 31.
