Member Communication and Engagement

In a world full of competing content and technologies, in order to remain engaging in 2022 and beyond, using a variety of engagement avenues is required. Individuals engage differently, and the American College of Chest Physicians is keenly aware of and caters to this variety of engagement preferences. From direct, targeted emails to organic social media posts, CHEST finds a way to communicate.

In communicating, CHEST also employs a variety of engaging elements that will pique the interest of the consumer—whether they are a member, a prospective member, or someone who is simply interested in learning the latest in chest medicine. With time as the most precious resource, in 2022, CHEST delved deeper into video content, podcasts, and more to garner and keep attention and to be worthy of the time invested in the consumed content.

Direct outreach

Direct outreach takes many different forms at CHEST, and it ranges from hyper-personalized to passive outreach. The actively targeted outreach can look like an email to a specific individual who recently attended a simulation course and may be interested in one that is similar. It may also look like an email to a first-time CHEST Annual Meeting attendee, inviting and encouraging them to attend for a second year. By hyper-targeting the outreach, the email becomes personalized and more likely to be read to completion, resulting in action.

CHEST also produces a monthly publication (CHEST Physician®) and a variety of newsletters that are sent to passively communicate with members. The newsletters range from semi-targeted topic collection newsletters (asthma, COPD, sleep, and more) to the daily and weekly sends of CHEST Today and CHEST NewsBrief, which cover general chest medicine news, hot topics, and CHEST-specific news.

LOOKING AHEAD

In 2023, sepsis will be included as an additional area in the topic collections.

Social media

In 2022, social media is a critical means of communication, especially between an organization and its consumers. Social media is so prevalent that it is glaring when an organization is absent from a platform or doesn’t have a way to directly communicate with the public. CHEST maintains five social media accounts: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube.

Piece by Piece: Conversations With CHEST Leadership

A special multimedia initiative spoke to CHEST members just starting their leadership journey with CHEST. 2022 CHEST President, David Schulman, MD, MPH, FCCP, sought to demystify the inner workings of the organization by speaking with a variety of leaders to share their path within CHEST. This series unveiled the different “pieces” of CHEST and resulted in 12 videos ranging from getting involved with the Annual Meeting, to the different paths to becoming CHEST President.

Listening to CHEST

Given the growing number of consumers getting their entertainment and learning materials through podcasts, CHEST committed more fully to the audio-only vehicle in 2022 by releasing several episodes on our CHEST Pulse podcast channel.

In 2023, CHEST will embark on a new multimedia and educational venture with virtual reality to complement the First 5 Minutes® empathy- and trust-building initiative in pairing with e-learning modules. This technology is expected to provide first-hand experience for the participant, placing them directly into a practice scenario.
