Understanding Asthma

According to the Summary of Health Statistics, National Health Interview Survey, 2012, 18.7 million adults and 6.8 million children in the United States suffer from asthma. Asthma costs the United States about $56 million in medical costs, lost school and workdays and early deaths (Source: CDC Vital Signs). There are 14.2 million visits to physicians’ offices with asthma as a primary diagnosis that occur annually (National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, 2010).

Of the 300 million patients worldwide with asthma, 5-10% have severe disease that remains difficult to control despite topical inhaler therapy.  In fact, patients with severe asthma consume up to 60% of the asthma budget through unscheduled primary care visits and hospital admissions. Many patients don’t recognize that the symptoms they are experiencing could be severe asthma and feel that it’s just something they will have to live with when in reality it is treatable. There is a lack of understanding of what good asthma control is.
