Top 10 reasons to attend CPET in September

By: William W. Stringer, MD, FCCP

As a Professor of Medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and as a pulmonologist with over 30 years of experience, I am excited to be one of the three chairs for CHEST’s September Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing course.

If you’re considering taking this course at CHEST this September 22 to 24, but are still wavering in your decision-making, I have compiled a list of my top ten reasons for taking this course in hopes that I might be able to sway you:

  1. Improve your physiologic acumen and diagnostic skills with regard to exercise testing and interpretation in clinical medicine.  All providers (Pulmonary, Internal Medicine, Hospitalists, and Family Medicine), mid-levels (eg, NP and PAs), Exercise Technologists and Physiologists, etc.) are warmly invited!
  2. Take advantage of a 3-day, hands-on program in a casual environment with fantastic, experienced, thoughtful faculty.
  3. Learn what cases or sign/symptom complexes best benefit from the use of CPET in your pulmonary and critical care practice.
  4. Update and incorporate current CPET clinical practice guidelines with respect to exercise testing into your daily patient care.
  5. Utilize the optimal strategy for lifelong learning, i.e., case-based, small group discussion, and focused learning.
  6. Understand how to best utilize equipment, exercise protocols, blood drawing, type of exercise (eg, treadmill vs cycle testing, ramp vs constant work rate testing, etc.), biological calibration, data display, and graphical interpretation of exercise tests to nuance your CPET skills. Include your technician in this course to optimize the environment at your institution.
  7. Learn about the most up-to-date CPET equipment and how that CPET equipment is best suited for your practice environment.  If you are a CPET medical lab director, come to the course, and we will make you a JEDI at your JOB!
  8. Come to Chicago in the early fall and enjoy wonderful weather, fantastic food, professional camaraderie, and relaxation in the state-of-the-art CHEST facility designed and built to optimize the educational and simulation experience for providers.
  9. Casual atmosphere to discuss challenging and interesting cases with some of the top CPET faculty in the world.  Bring cases you would like to discuss.  We would like to start the discussion early with this blog, so send any specific questions you have, and, of course, the de-identified cases with you to the course
  10. If you still need one more reason…. CME and MOC credit!

I would love for you to join me at CHEST Global Headquarters this September 22 to 24, for the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing course. Give yourself the opportunity to learn effective strategies from exercise experts that will improve your exercise lab.
