Journal CHEST Impact Factor update from Clarivate’s 2020 Journal Citations Reports

GLENVIEW, IL – The journal CHEST®, the official publication of the American College of Chest Physicians® (CHEST), obtained a Journal Impact Factor (JIF) of 8.308 in the latest Journal Citation Reports. The journal retained the rank of 4th out of 36 journals in the Critical Care category and is 6th out of 64 journals in the Respiratory System category.

The Impact Factor, a proprietary measure owned and issued by Clarivate Analytics, roughly calculates the number of times journal articles published in the two preceding years are cited in the current year. Thus, the most recent Impact Factor is calculated as the number of citations received in 2019 to articles published in 2017 and 2018. In the two-year review period, CHEST journal articles were cited 4,013 times.

The journal is a leading source of peer-reviewed, cutting-edge original research in the multidisciplinary specialties of chest medicine: pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine and related disciplines. It is home to highly regarded clinical practice guidelines and consensus statements that resonate with a broad audience of medical professionals. CHEST journal continues to hold the highest independent readership scores among the hospital-based professionals most directly served by the clinical research published in the journal based on an independent study from a leading research firm.

“I am proud of the content the journal is publishing and grateful to the contributing authors, peer reviewers, editorial and publishing teams,” says Peter J. Mazzone, MD, MPH, FCCP, Editor in Chief. “We will continue to find innovative ways to bring our readers the highest quality research and patient management guidance, provide our contributors with a great experience and increase access to our content through our multimedia efforts.”

In addition to the JIF ranking, the Eigenfactor metric, which eliminates the potential bias of self-citations, is 0.04662 and ranks CHEST journal third in both the Respiratory Medicine and Critical Care Medicine categories.

Selected articles and topics are promoted via social media and press releases. Each month, the journal hosts podcast discussions with authors of articles from the current issue, adding context and commentary to the challenges facing clinicians in the fields of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine.

Visual Abstracts, infographic-style overviews of a research study that summarize and translate key messages from the manuscript in a visual way, are used to promote the research presented in CHEST journal and to encourage the reading of the full manuscript. The use of Visual Abstracts has been shown to extend the reach of published research.

Published monthly, the journal has an average initial decision time of two weeks with notice of acceptance to online first publication within three weeks and to print in five months. The acceptance rate for original research averages between 9-13%.
