Member Communication and Engagement

Given the demanding nature of the profession of chest medicine, the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) employs a variety of elements that will engage the consumer—whether they are a member, a prospective member, or someone who is simply interested in learning the latest advances in the field.

Individuals engage differently, and CHEST caters to this variety of engagement preferences through targeted emails, organic social media content, and more. With time as the most precious resource, CHEST finds a way to communicate what the audience needs to know to further their careers and, ultimately, improve patient care.

To attract and keep the interest of an audience, content needs to be fresh, engaging, and unique. In 2023, CHEST produced a wide variety of videos and podcasts tailored to appeal to the diverse interests of our audiences.

Watching CHEST

Knowing that today’s consumer is exceptionally visual and enjoys motion content, CHEST leaned heavily on video for a number of projects, including educational webinars, stories from our grant winners, overviews of our flagship programs like the First 5 Minutes®, and more.

Listening to CHEST

Given the growing number of consumers getting their entertainment and learning materials through podcasts, CHEST leaned into the audio-only vehicle in 2023 by releasing several episodes on our CHEST Pulse podcast channel, including a series on unraveling complex cases of sepsis.

Direct outreach

Direct outreach takes many different forms at CHEST, including direct email campaigns and newsletters with daily or weekly updates on the latest in the field of chest medicine. While newsletters are distributed to a broad list of recipients, direct emails can be hyper-personalized to accomplish specific goals, like sending information about the CHEST Annual Meeting to an audience that is entering its final years of fellowship but has yet to attend a meeting. By hyper-targeting the outreach, the email becomes personalized and more likely to be read to completion, resulting in action.

CHEST also produces a monthly publication (CHEST Physician®) and a variety of newsletters that are sent to passively communicate with members. The newsletters range from semi-targeted topic collection newsletters (asthma, COPD, sleep, and more) to the daily and weekly sends of CHEST Today® and CHEST NewsBrief® newsletters, which cover general chest medicine news, hot topics, and CHEST-specific news.

In 2023, supported by a grant/cooperative agreement from the CDC’s Department of Health and Human Services, CHEST added a newsletter dedicated to sepsis, which highlighted content from a new sepsis topic collection webpage.
