#CHESTChat: Post-COVID-19 Syndrome

By: Devang Sanghavi, MD; Chidinma Chima-Melton, MD; and Navitha Ramesh, MD

The upcoming #CHESTChat on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at 6 pm CT, will focus on post-COVID-19 syndrome, colloquially also known as “long-haul COVID-19.” Long-haul COVID—or post-COVID-19 syndrome—is a condition in which patients who contracted COVID-19 infection don’t recover from the symptoms of COVID-19 for weeks to months. This affects a multitude of organ systems with remanent symptoms in a large proportion of patients who are recovering from COVID-19. From the neuropsychiatric perspective, patients experience brain fog or cognitive impairment, fatigue, anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and headaches. Pulmonary and cardiac symptoms include persistent shortness of breath, or dyspnea, and need for oxygen supplementation. Additionally, patients can experience persistent kidney dysfunction, debilitating weakness, and worsened control of diabetes. These long-haul symptoms can also develop in patients who were initially asymptomatic. At this time, it is not clear why some patients develop this syndrome and others do not. Treatment of most of the post-COVID symptoms is currently symptom-based, but thoughtful diagnostic evaluation is often needed. The care of such patients requires an interprofessional approach.

This chat will focus on various aspects of the care of patients experiencing post-COVID-19 syndrome and harness the expertise of our faculty to provide attendees a shared plan to approach their patients based on the most current evidence.

  • T1: What are the most common long-term symptoms of COVID-19?
  • T2: What are some factors that put patients at a higher risk of developing post-COVID-19 syndrome?
  • T3: What is the appropriate treatment setting/system for post-COVID-19 syndrome?
  • T4: How and when should symptoms of post-COVID-19 syndrome be investigated?
  • T5: What is the current standard of treatment of post-COVID-19 syndrome?
