Where do you work?
Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and Divisions of Adult Cardiac and Cardiothoracic Surgery at CHI Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, Houston, TX.

What are your research interests, and how does this apply to your position within the Networks?
I am currently the Lung Transplant Section Vice-Chair under the Diffuse Lung Disease and Lung Transplant Network. My research interests revolve around increasing utilization of donor lungs to enhance access to lifesaving organs. I have had the privilege of initiating portable ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) translational and clinical programs and am credited with the first “breathing lung” transplant in the Midwest and in Texas, and the first donation after cardiac death (DCD) EVLP lung transplant in the US.

How did you become interested and involved in the Diffuse Lung Disease and Lung Transplant Network?
I attended and participated in the CHEST conferences. I had good mentorship from CHEST leadership. I was involved in donor quality projects. These things led me to become more involved in this Network.

Are you involved in any other activities or volunteer positions at CHEST?
Committee Co-Chair and Moderator – CHEST 2021 NetWork Highlight
Conference Proposal Grader – CHEST Annual Meeting 2022
Planner and Webinar Series Co-Chair – Career Pathways in Transplant Pulmonology: Why, Where, and How?

What clinical research is most interesting to you right now?
My current research initiatives focus on donor lung preservation as well as ways to reduce the incidence of primary graft dysfunction in lung transplant recipients by creating an international multicenter registry.

What are your hobbies?
Music and travel.

What is something you cannot live without (after family and friends)?
Music and exercise.
