The CHEST Citizens of the Global Majority Interest Group works to eliminate professional and health care disparities while promoting antiracist and decolonial approaches within medicine. Through professional development, health equity initiatives, and education, this Interest Group empowers CHEST members to drive meaningful, lasting change for colleagues and patients alike.

The collective term “global majority” refers to people who are Black, Asian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Latine, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and/or have been racialized as “ethnic minorities.” Currently, these groups represent approximately 80% of the world’s population and thus constitute a global majority.

Our focus

The Citizens of the Global Majority Interest Group envisions a world where:

  • Professional disparities experienced by members of the global majority in chest medicine are eradicated.
  • Disparities in health care for patients of the global majority are eradicated.
  • Organizational and institutional systems of support demonstrate a commitment to antiracism and decoloniality.
  • CHEST members are fully equipped and empowered with the education and skills necessary to dismantle institutional systems of bias and discrimination.

The group is built on three pillars:

Professional development

Develop and maintain high-impact professional development, mentoring, and leadership skills and opportunities for members of the global majority at all stages in their careers.

Health equity

Contribute to efforts that advance health equity for patients of the global majority, including ensuring that members are equipped with the skills and competencies they need to provide culturally relevant and inclusive care.

Education and awareness

Offer expert guidance and function as a resource at CHEST regarding issues that impact members and patients of the global majority. Represent the concerns of Interest Group members and their patients to CHEST leadership.
