  • Working with a team using crew resource management concepts to solve airway problems in a high-fidelity, simulated clinical environment, using scenarios developed from real-life cases
  • Learning and applying algorithms to both universal and failed airway scenarios
  • Developing a standardized APPROACH to preparation in order to maximize procedural success and patient safety
  • Identifying exam findings associated with a difficult airway, practicing the essential skills of intubation, and learning to use innovative new advanced airway tools to manage difficult airways
  • Gaining hands-on experience with a multitude of video laryngoscopes, bougies, and other intubating devices proven to increase first-pass intubation success
  • Utilizing extraglottic airways to reestablish ventilation if intubation is not successful
  • Recognizing when and how to use cricothyrotomy for failed airways

Course Format

The lecture-based learning for this course will be done online prior to the course date(s). You will receive access to the recorded lectures and will be expected to review all sessions prior to arriving for in-person learning. The in-person session will focus on hands-on, interactive training with expert faculty, who will share their skills and answer questions.

When registering for the course, you will be asked to choose date(s) for the in-person session. Multiple in-person sessions are offered to accommodate the most learners while following COVID-19 safety protocol. The instructions for all in-person sessions will be the same, so you will only attend one in-person session. No more than 18 learners will be allowed per session, so register early for best chances of reserving your preferred dates.

Target Audience

This course is for respiratory therapists, advanced practice providers, physicians, and other health care professionals with an interest in critical care or emergency medicine.

COVID-19 Safety Precautions

COVID-19 safety protocols will be followed during this course. Everyone attending must have completed an FDA-approved vaccination for COVID-19. This includes faculty, learners, and all staff supporting the course. No more than 18 learners per group will be allowed to participate in the in-person portion of the course. Social distancing guidelines will be enforced, and masks will be required at all times.

Education Mission

To develop educational delivery systems for chest, critical care, and sleep physicians that facilitate lifelong learning, optimize clinical care, and meet the Education Committee goals.

Physician Credit

CHEST is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CHEST designates this live activity for a maximum of 28.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CME credit hours are subject to change. Final CME credit hours will be provided on-site.

Nursing Credit

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 16433, for 28.25 contact hours.

Nurse Practitioners

The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit from organizations accredited by the ACCME. Individuals are responsible for checking with the AANPCB for further guidelines.

Physician Assistants

American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. PAs may receive a maximum of 28.25 Category 1 credits for completing this activity.

Maintenance of Certification Statement

Successful completion of this CME activity enables the participant to earn up to 28.25 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC points.

Upon successful completion of this course, CHEST will submit your completion data to ABIM via ACCME’s Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS) for MOC points. Please allow 5-7 business days after claiming for credits to be posted to your ABIM record.

Your tuition fee includes attendance at all course sessions and electronic access to course materials. Lunch and refreshments during breaks will be provided. Breakfast is available at CHEST-affiliated hotels. Printed materials or flash drives will not be provided.

After you register for the course, you will receive an email with details about completing the course pretest and accessing course materials (made available 10 to 14 days prior to the course start). Data collected on your performance with assessments will be available through our site.

Laptops or tablet computers are required for the course. The general session room will be equipped with wireless internet access and power for personal electronics.

Cancellation Policy
