This program offers comprehensive, hands-on experience. Take individual courses, or earn the Certificate of Completion (COC) for critical care ultrasound. 

Program Requirements

(Must be completed within 3 years of starting the program; listed in recommended order of completion. Portfolio images must be generated and collected personally after attending one of the two live courses).

  1. Complete Online Learning Module: Bedside Ultrasound in Critical Care CAE Online

    Supplement, strengthen, and refine your ultrasound coursework. Designed by frontline intensivist experts in critical care ultrasonography, these interactive, multimedia e-learning tutorials review essential components of critical care ultrasound. CME for Modules expired December 31, 2014.

  2. Attend Ultrasonography: Essentials in Critical Care

    Review key elements of critical care ultrasonography, and practice image acquisition on human models. Ultrasound images demonstrating normal and pathologic findings offer a comprehensive learning opportunity.

  3. Attend Critical Care Ultrasonography: Integration Into Clinical Practice

    Study whole-body ultrasonography for diagnosis and management of the critically ill patient in a hands-on learning environment using human models and state-of-the art simulators. Expert faculty will provide comprehensive training in protocol-driven image acquisition and case-based image interpretation.

  5. Pass a Final Comprehensive Final Assessment

    All previous requirements must be met before taking the exam. Opportunities to complete the final assessment are offered during the CHEST Annual Meeting or CHEST Ultrasonography: Essentials in Critical Care Live Learning course is offered during the year. See the CHEST education calendar for course dates. CME is not offered for the portfolio or the final assessment.

Participants are required to complete the COC program within 3 years.

Target Audience

  • Bedside intensivists interested in acquiring competence in critical care ultrasonography.
  • Fellowship program directors who need to develop faculty capability in ultrasonography in order to train their fellows.

Requirements for Portfolio Image Collection

Cardiac Study (10 studies with the following images per study)
Total: 50 images

  1. Parasternal long axis view
  2. Parasternal short axis view
  3. Apical four-chamber view
  4. Subcostal long axis view
  5. Inferior vena cava longitudinal view

Lung/Pleural Study (4 studies with the following images per study)
Total: 12 images

  1. Pleural effusion (any size)
  2. Sliding lung
  3. Consolidation

Abdominal Study (4 studies with the following images per study)
Total: 16 images

  1. Left kidney longitudinal view with splenorenal space
  2. Right kidney longitudinal view with hepatorenal recess
  3. Abdominal aorta longitudinal view
  4. Bladder transverse view

Vascular Diagnostic DVT Study (3 studies with the following images per study - include right and left legs)
Total: 24 images

  1. Right common femoral vein with compression
  2. Left common femoral vein with compression
  3. Right common femoral vein at saphenous intake with compression
  4. Left common femoral vein at saphenous intake with compression
  5. Right superficial femoral vein with compression
  6. Left superficial femoral vein with compression
  7. Right popliteal vein with compression
  8. Left popliteal vein with compression

Total number of required images for portfolio completion: 102
