Support for All Communities and a Call for De-escalation of Harm

The American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) is deeply shaken by the loss of a fellow caregiver, ICU nurse Alex Pretti, in a recent encounter that resulted in his death during a federal enforcement operation in Minneapolis, following the tragic killing of Renee Nicole Good earlier this month. We mourn his passing, honor the life he devoted to caring for others, and stand with everyone who has lost a loved one to violence.

These deaths remind us that fear, conflict, and unrest have profound and lasting effects on individuals, families, and the health care professionals who serve them. Nurses, physicians, and all health care workers see every day the toll that fear, conflict, and unrest take on communities, individuals, and families. Still they step forward, upholding their pledge to preserve life.

At CHEST, we remain committed to supporting clinicians and promoting a culture of compassion by encouraging empathy, respect, and care for one another. We believe in the inherent dignity of every person and in the necessity for transparency, thoughtful dialogue, and approaches that reduce harm, foster understanding, and strengthen our bonds.

In alignment with our mission and values, CHEST calls on the federal administration to:

  • Prioritize de-escalation of harm and protection of human life in all public safety and enforcement activities;
  • Ensure transparent, accountable investigations whenever loss of life occurs;
  • Support evidence-based dialogue and policy responses that reinforce safety, trust, and community well-being; and
  • Reaffirm the dignity and humanity of every person, especially in moments of crisis.

This ask comes not from partisanship but from our commitment to safeguarding the health, security, and mutual respect that all communities deserve.

To our health care community, we ask you to continue supporting one another and to seek and accept the help you need to carry you through these challenging times. And, as always, remember that you are not alone.
