Committees

Each spring, the Call for Committee Applications is open to all CHEST members, indicating which committees will have openings for terms beginning the next leadership term cycle. Nominees are asked to submit a biographical sketch, a statement of interest/purpose, and a completed conflict of interest form. Terms of office run from January 1 to December 31.

Completed applications are reviewed by committee leadership, and recommendations for appointment are made to the President-Elect for open positions. The President-Elect, in partnership with CHEST staff, reviews the current members of each committee and assesses the expertise needed to make each committee productive and successful. The recommended candidates are reviewed and chosen based on the needs of each committee.

Candidates are notified of their appointment(s) in late summer and contacted by staff liaisons prior to the CHEST Annual Meeting, informing them of conference call/meeting schedules, expectations, and policies and procedures of their committee. Questions regarding the Call for Committee Applications can be sent to elections@chestnet.org.

Responsibilities

• Annually evaluate and make recommendations to the CHEST Board of Regents regarding the compensation and expenses paid to the Executive Vice President, the total compensation and bonus amounts paid to CHEST employees as a group, and any compensation paid to the officers.
• Review the expenses reimbursed to CHEST members in connection with their service.
• Annually review the performance of the CEO, and make a report and any related recommendations to the board.
• Perform other duties relating to compensation as the Board of Regents may assign.

The Council of Networks reports to the CHEST Board of Regents through the seats of the Chair and Vice-Chair on the board and is made up of chairs of the seven Networks.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a governing body for all CHEST Networks and corresponding Sections.
• Review and approve Network project applications, as received.
• Identify key internal and external stakeholders to participate in projects.
• Facilitate communication and content development among the Networks and CHEST committees.
• Identify Network experts to respond to requests and act as participants or representatives in external meetings/liaisons to other organizations, as well as internal panels or committees, as needed.

The Education Executive Committee is responsible for partnering with CHEST’s Chief Learning Officer (CLO) to advise and enhance CHEST’s educational strategies and programs. The Education Executive Committee's goal is to ensure high-quality, innovative, and effective education for medical professionals, aligned with CHEST’s mission, vision, values, and goals. The Education Executive Committee is responsible for monitoring the latest trends, technological advancements, and regulatory requirements in the medical field.

The Education Executive Committee reports directly to the Board of Regents. The Education Executive Committee has direct oversight over the Education Committee and Subcommittee structure and participates cross-functionally to remain informed of activities amongst other education-related volunteer leadership groups.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the CLO to serve as a strategic advisor for all education activities. Participate in regular calls and meetings as scheduled (monthly, at minimum).
• Oversee medical standards and practices within the education framework for the organization. Ensure that all educational programs adhere to the highest medical standards.
• Keep CLO updated on new opportunities, trends, and developments within the medical and health care sectors that could impact or benefit CHEST’s educational programs.
• Provide support and guidance for Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education reaccreditation processes, ensuring compliance and the fulfillment of all educational criteria.
• Oversee and communicate CHEST’s education strategy, and remain informed of cross-organizational efforts with other leadership groups.

The Education Committee is responsible for providing input and perspectives related to CHEST educational activities. The Education Committee serves as a broader group of education experts to assist and inform the Education Executive Committee on the latest trends, technological advancements, and regulatory requirements in the medical field.

Responsibilities

The Education Committee achieves this mission through the following strategic initiatives:

• Partner with the Education Executive Committee to participate in ongoing educational gap analyses in the diagnosis and management of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep disorders, identifying new educational activities that should be initiated to fill gaps, meet member needs, and support the CHEST strategic plan.
• Provide input related to CHEST’s educational activities that provide practitioners with current best practices based on current published evidence and guidelines.
• Promote the application of adult learning principles to all education programming, ensuring CHEST programs meet or exceed current guidelines of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and fulfill American Board of Internal Medicine Maintenance of Certification requirements.
• Partner with the Education Executive Committee to assess the impact of CHEST educational interventions using assessment instruments capable of evaluating short- and long-term changes in knowledge, skills, and performance, with a goal of improving clinical care delivery.
• Participate in completing the core committee and organizational-level milestones.

Live Learning Subcommittee

• Oversee the development of content for courses and activities across key Domain Task Forces.
• Evaluate live learning programs on an annual basis.

The purpose of the FCCP Subcommittee is to maintain and elevate the integrity of the CHEST community through oversight of the FCCP application process. The FCCP Subcommittee reports to the Professional Standards Committee.

Responsibilities

The roles and responsibilities of the FCCP Subcommittee are as follows:

• Evaluate and adjudicate applications for FCCP.
• Provide guidance and direction to any rejected applications to support their future success.
• Work with the Professional Standards Committee on appeals.
• Provide analysis to the Professional Standards Committee and membership and marketing staff on trends gleaned through applications, including common challenges.
• Serve as an ambassador and champion to new members and FCCPs by conducting personal outreach on a cadence defined by staff.

The purpose of the Finance Committee is to have general oversight of the organization’s finances, investments, financial systems, audits, budgets, and other such matters relating to the finances and investments of CHEST as may be assigned from time to time by the Board of Regents.

Responsibilities

The Finance Committee has the following specific responsibilities:

1. Monitor the financial activities of the organization on a quarterly basis, and present key metrics to the board.
2. Provide guidance on the preparation, presentation, and passage of the annual operating and capital budgets of the organization, and monitor their implementation.
3. Review any financing plans, the associated debt covenants, and related reporting to the Internal Revenue Service.
4. Review Form 990, and ensure it is distributed to the board.
5. Review the performance of the external audit team from an accounting, tax, and audit perspective, and, when needed, lead the search for a new auditing firm.
6. Develop and administer an investment program with diverse risk characteristics across a variety of asset classes.
7. Direct the investment and management of assets, including approval of asset allocation ranges and targets, authorization of periodic asset rebalancing, approval of investment performance benchmarks, and monitoring of investment performance.

The Guidelines Oversight Committee (GOC) aims to optimize patient care by generating the highest quality evidence-based guidelines, consensus statements, and hybrid documents to support clinical practice in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chest disease.

Responsibilities

The GOC makes recommendations to the CHEST Board of Regents on issues related to health, science, and clinical policy in areas of cardiopulmonary medicine and surgery, critical care, sleep medicine, and related disciplines. The committee is responsible for overseeing the preparation of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, consensus statements, and hybrid documents on behalf of CHEST that meet the following criteria:

• Encompasses conditions or interventions that potentially have high global public health and economic impact and in which management could be significantly improved by application of evidence-based statements to clinical practice.
• Inclusion of a clinical topic(s) where treatment or diagnostic strategies are evolving.
• Presence of a sufficient established body of published evidence for development of a clinical practice guideline.
• Reflects the constituency of CHEST, and may cross over to other disciplines.

The Training and Transitions Committee (T&T) provides a structure for members who are trainees to actively participate in organization activities and initiatives. This committee works to ensure that the input and needs of trainee members are met through the educational and networking opportunities.

• Act as the review and grading body for the CHEST Annual Meeting case report session development process. Grade case report submissions (online).
• Develop case report sessions (online and during one face-to-face meeting) for the annual meeting.

The Trainee Work Group is an initiative of the Training and Transitions Committee charged with a mission of enhancing the educational experience and professional development of trainees by providing them with structure and content, affording them an opportunity to become future CHEST leaders by fostering their involvement in CHEST activities.
